Are Dental Implants Painful to Have Done?

Posted on: October 16, 2018

Getting dental implants is a huge convenience since they offer a permanence and stability that other treatments do not. While many people believe that it is quite painful to get implants, the truth is that it is not. In fact, if you follow some simple and easy instructions, the pain is relatively low and the procedure is fairly quick and painless.

Tips for getting dental implants

Only a mild soreness

As with most dental procedures, there will be some mild soreness and discomfort after the numbness wears off and the dental implant surgery is complete. However, the actual surgery itself is fairly painless as everything that will be operated on is going to be numbed. The basic procedure is that they will go into the gum and put in an implant that connects to your jawbone in order to replace the root for your new tooth or teeth.

To cause less pain and discomfort during the procedure, you will be given a local anesthetic. Depending on your dentist and your preferences, you may also have the option to be sedated for the duration of the dental implant procedure.

What you can do to ease the pain

The type and intensity of the pain you will feel afterward will vary based on how long the procedure goes for you and if anything needs to be done such as modifications to the jawbone itself. If your gums and jawbone are mostly in good health, then there should be relatively less pain afterward than you expect that is fairly similar to the pain left after a standard tooth removal.

The main types of discomfort you should expect to feel are some swelling and pain in your gums. In order to prevent or treat any pain afterward, there are a few things you can do. The first is to make sure you get a good dentist that is experienced in this kind of work and will be able to complete the procedure quickly and efficiently.

The less time they have to tinker with your gums, the less pain you’re likely to feel afterward. Another is to make sure you take care of your current teeth and your gums so that you can heal better after getting the dental implants and are less likely to require additional work being done when you get your implants.

Follow professional recommendations

Once you have gotten your dental implants, some ways you can reduce swelling are painkiller like Tylenol. Depending on your dentist, a pain reliever may be prescribed to you. You can also use ice packs to assist in bringing down the swelling. In order to avoid irritating your gums after receiving the implants, it is best to stick to softer and colder foods for a while.

It is also important to keep your mouth clean but be gentle to the area that received the implant. You can also rinse with salt water as well to help with the pain.  It is very important to keep your teeth and the area surrounding the implants clean to avoid any infection.

One last thing you want to check is to make sure you are a good candidate for dental implants. It is not typically recommended as highly if you have an autoimmune disease, are a smoker, or if you have a weaker bone structure in your jaw. Just follow these tips and make sure to keep your mouth clean and you should be able to get your dental implants with very little pain.
